The Fund offers a range of professional and capacity-building programmes that enable national cadres to gain practical experience in macroeconomics, fiscal policy, and monetary and financial stability.

Key Available Programmes:

Economist Programme: A professional programme targeting young economic talent, allowing participants to work within Fund teams on economic analysis, policy formulation, and research. Participants engage in analysing economic data, preparing reports, and contributing to the design of economic programmes for member countries, thereby building their professional capabilities and qualifying them for future leadership roles.

Externally Funded Assignment Programme (EFAP): This programme is designed to strengthen cooperation between the Fund and member countries by providing public sector officials the opportunity to work at the Fund for a defined period, with a view to developing their professional capabilities and facilitating knowledge transfer. The estimated programme cost is approximately USD 250,000, targeting officials with experience in economic policy.

Key Nomination Criteria:

  • Strong economic analysis skills.
  • Professional experience typically ranging from 3 to 15 years in economic policy or academic research.
  • Preference for candidates with expertise in macroeconomics, financial stability, or public finance.
  • A postgraduate degree in economics (PhD preferred).

  • Government-Provided Advisers: Appointed to support the Office of the Executive Director at the IMF Executive Board, participating in policy analysis and monitoring Board activities.
  • Special Appointee Programme: Designed to provide public sector officials in member countries with an understanding of the Fund’s operational mechanisms and to strengthen institutional cooperation.
  • Staff Secondment to the IMF Regional Office in Riyadh: This programme enables economists to be seconded to the IMF Regional Office in Riyadh, where they participate in economic analysis and support research activities, conferences, and economic policy work across the region.
