The Ministry of Finance (MoF) recently participated in G20 Finance Track’s second Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) meeting, which was held virtually under the Indonesian Presidency. The meeting sought to discuss the latest updates on the IWG work plan, the progress made by international organisations on the group’s priorities for 2022, and the next steps in the identified focus areas for this year.Mr. Ali Sharafi, Director of the Budget Department at MoF, and Ms. Amna Hassan Al Shamsi, Head of Policies, Regulations and Procedures at MoF, participated in the meeting along with G20 members, invited countries, representatives from international organisations and the IWG’s affiliated partners.The IWG members discussed the need to advance Quality Infrastructure Investment agenda, explore new ways to scaling up sustainable infrastructure investment, enhance social inclusion in infrastructure development, promote digital infrastructure investment, and deploy technology in advancing infrastructure. Furthermore, the meeting sought to deliberate the mechanisms of addressing subnational disparities by mobilising private sector investments to reduce unequal capabilities in delivering infrastructure services. The members also reviewed the InfraTracker programme, which aims to track the amount of infrastructure stimulus announced by G20 members in response to COVID-19 pandemic.The UAE team stressed on the importance of designing sustainable infrastructure projects that attract investment, and continuing to work on developing indicators that support investing in sustainable infrastructure. The UAE team also recommended focusing on data protection and confidentiality, being considered as potential risks to employing technology in infrastructure development.At the end of the meeting, the participating members and international organisations agreed on reviewing the progress made in terms of the IWG outputs during the next meeting in June 2022.
